North Carolina Launches New Tools To Help Veterans Find Jobs

North Carolina veterans now have new tools available to help them find jobs, Governor Roy Cooper announced today just ahead of Veterans Day and Employ a Veteran Week. The North Carolina Department of Commerce has developed the NCWorks Veterans Portal – located at veterans.ncworks.gov – to help both job seekers and employers.

“We’re grateful for veterans’ service to our nation, and proud that so many veterans choose to call North Carolina home when they leave the military,” Gov. Cooper said. “This new portal gives veterans a direct way to connect critical skills and experience gained through military service to new careers in high-demand fields, and it will also connect North Carolina employers looking to hire these proven hard workers.”

The NCWorks Veterans Portal is part of Governor Cooper’s NC Job Ready strategy to prepare North Carolinians for the jobs of today and tomorrow. NC Job Ready has three core principles: skills and education attainment, employer leadership to remain relevant to evolving industry needs, and local innovation to take great ideas and apply them statewide.

Designed specifically with veterans in mind, the NCWorks Veterans Portal features tabs that provide quick access to employment services, job fairs, education/training options, helpful tips and other resources. In addition, a tab for employers helps businesses recruit candidates with military experience.

“The new NCWorks Veterans Portal is an excellent example of our state’s innovative efforts to enhance services to those North Carolinians who have served our country in the armed services,” Commerce Secretary Anthony Copeland said. “As the nation prepares to celebrate Veterans Day, we should recommit ourselves to the cause of connecting our veterans to training and employment opportunities so that they can use their talents and skills in new careers.”

The portal incorporates veterans’ Military Occupation Codes in an easy-to-use job search tool, so that users can find job postings that match their prior experience and training from any of the five branches of the armed services. Veterans who already have NCWorks Online accounts will use those same login credentials on this new portal. The site also helps veterans find their nearest NCWorks Career Center, where they can access free services in person and talk with professionals who specialize in helping veterans.

“This portal is another tool that we will have in our toolbox as we move forward to meet our goals of retaining the top military talent as they transition into civilian life, and being the most veteran-friendly state in the United States,” said Archie Barrow, director of the Veteran Employment and Training Service for the N.C. Division of Workforce Solutions and a United States Army veteran. “North Carolina again is leading the nation in innovation.”

Home to nearly 800,000 veterans and several major military installations, North Carolina has a distinguished history in serving the U.S. military, veterans and their families. Broadly defined, “green jobs” are jobs involved in economic activities that help protect or restore the environment or conserve natural resources. These economic activities generally fall into the following categories: Renewable energy, energy efficiency, greenhouse gas reduction, pollution reduction and cleanup, recycling and waste reduction, agricultural and natural resources conservation, education, compliance, public awareness, and training. These economic activities result in the production of green goods and services. The Bureau of Labor Statistics defined these to include: Direct green goods and services, indirect green goods and services, specialized inputs, and the distribution of green goods.

The MARC Green Consortium will conduct a regional survey to define the area’s green economy by identifying green jobs, their requirements and other occupational characteristics at the state, regional and local levels. This baseline measure – along with an estimate of the impact of green technology and other green investments on job creation - will be used to track job growth and contribute to the development of a regional green workforce development plan.

Established in 2008, MARC is a regional organization guided by the leadership from the State Workforce Agencies for the District of Columbia, the State of Maryland and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Its focus is to enhance the economic vitality of the District of Columbia, the State of Maryland, and the Commonwealth of Virginia. Version 11.1 of the HireNet Hawaii Virtual OneStop® and Green Jobs Hawaii launched in May 2011, providing universal access to online services for individuals seeking jobs and employers seeking employees within the green industry. Version 11.1 of HireNet Hawaii will provide users with a wide array of employment-related services. Job seekers will be able to search for available jobs using a search engine that aggregates jobs from company and government websites, newspaper postings and corporate job boards. Job searches can be conducted for a radius of a zip code, by city or county, by metropolitan or workforce area, or on a statewide basis. Job seekers will be able to search for training opportunities within the system and employers can have access to recent training graduates. Employers can search for talent and rank the candidates using the automated system.

Virtual OneStop® will provide Labor Market Information and skill requirements for the job listed. Job seekers can develop resumes and cover letters and then submit them directly to the employer online. Job seekers will now be able to search for 2009 American Recovery and Reinvestment Act initiatives such as Green Jobs, Veteran-preferred jobs, Summer Youth, etc. Version 11.1 can also be configured to integrate with our UI benefits functionality.

Version 11.1 will provide staff with the most cutting-edge job matching and referral system. All services provided to employers or job seekers, whether self-service or staff-assisted, will be accounted for and used to improve agency performance and regional economic growth initiatives. Case Managers can also enter and track individuals’ financial aid, budgeting, employment plans, training attendance and WIA case management. Version 11.1 also brings a plethora of newly added staff alert notification/subscriptions.

Occupations that are identified as O*NET Green Occupations, are now indicated with an icon in Virtual OneStop and Virtual LMI, similarly how high-demand and Bright Outlook occupations are. The templates available for resumes have also been enhanced to include a Federal format option, which can be used when applying for government jobs.

States Unite to Develop MARC Green Jobs Consortium Portal

In June 2009, the United States Department of Labor (USDOL) released a competitive solicitation for grant announcement for State Labor Market Information (LMI) Improvement Grants. Eligible entities included consortia of State Workforce Agencies. The State of Maryland, on behalf of the Mid-Atlantic Regional Collaborative (MARC), competed for and won a $4 million grant to create innovative LMI products and tools that will support the strategic and systematic expansion of a region-wide green economy. This initiative is known as the MARC Green Consortium. Outcomes of this 18-month project will include a comprehensive regional green industry and employment survey, supplemental related research, and a real time employment and labor market information web portal.

Governor Crist Launches Florida Gulf Recovery Jobs Web Site

Governor Charlie Crist today unveiled Florida Gulf Recovery Jobs, a Web site that allows job seekers to locate and apply for positions created in response to the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill. Florida Gulf Recovery Jobs, found at www.floridagulfrecoveryjobs.com, is a dedicated portal through Florida's official online job bank, the Employ Florida Marketplace, currently listing more than 3,500 positions related to response and recovery efforts, with additional positions posted regularly.

"Immediate access to recovery-related job openings provides Floridians the opportunity to help our state while supporting their families and communities," said Governor Crist. "Our beautiful Sunshine State remains open for business, and Florida Gulf Recovery Jobs is the latest example of our coordinated efforts to ensure preparedness and strengthen our economy." Florida Gulf Recovery Jobs is a joint venture of the Agency for Workforce Innovation and Workforce Florida Inc., in partnership with the state's 24 Regional Workforce Boards. Designed as an online "one-stop shop" for job seekers and employers, the Web site allows job seekers to access available positions, which are verified by the local Regional Workforce Boards, as employers post them. Floridians can also call 1-877-362-5034 to learn more about available jobs related to response and recovery efforts.
