First In NJ, Union County Offers “Virtual One-Stop” Employment Service To Help Job Seekers

As of Monday, June 1, job seekers in Union County can use the new Union County Works website to find job openings, job training and education opportunities, help create resumes, and more. It is the first county-based "virtual one-stop" employment service in New Jersey.

Union County Works is a project of Union County's American Job Center. The launch of the online platform makes the American Job Center the first local workforce area in the state of New Jersey to offer a virtual one stop to its residents. It is designed to help all job seekers, including veterans and youth, connect with resources remotely while offices are closed to the public during the COVID-19 outbreak.

"The Union County American Job Center was responsible for procuring a new system through a competitive process in July 2019, which resulted in a company called Geographic Solutions being selected for their Virtual One Stop platform, which is now called Union County Works," Mirabella explained.

Texas Internship Challenge Portal Helping College Students Find Real-World Experience

Whether used as a way to gain on-the-job experience, credit for college, or a foot in the door, the right internship can provide students with a chance to develop marketable skills, make industry connections, and immerse themselves in the work they’ll being performing after graduation.

In Texas, leaders from state agencies, including the Texas Workforce Commission, Texas Education Agency, and the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, have developed an easy-to-use website specifically designed to help college students find the perfect fit.

Hire A Veteran Day Highlights The Benefits Of The Employ Florida Vets Portal

With the goal of becoming the most veteran-friendly state in the nation, Florida Governor Ron Desantis announced Thursday that going forward, July 25 will be known statewide as Hire a Veteran Day.

DeSantis highlighted in his official statement how Florida business owners can directly benefit from their skills, such as leadership, experience, and dedication. He noted that the value veterans bring to the job market is crucial to business success and workforce diversity.

More than 1.5 million veterans call the Sunshine State home, and in 2019, nearly 4,000 veterans gained employment after assistance by the CareerSource Florida network. Launched in 2017, the Employ Florida Vets online portal assists veterans and their families with accomplishing their employment goals. This includes providing information, resource links, and job opportunities.

On the employer side, business owners can use the portal to post available jobs, access information about hiring veterans, and find out if their business qualifies for local, state, or federal tax incentives.

Nationwide, the veteran unemployment rate is at an all-time low, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. At 3.2 percent, the rate is the lowest it’s been since 2001.

Iowa Workforce Development Launches New User-Friendly Employment Services System

Des Moines, IA - Today, Iowa Workforce Development Launched the new IowaWORKS online employment services system across the state. The IowaWORKS site provides a variety of employment resources, tools and services to meet the needs of customers, employers and staff members.

Nevada Launches Employment Services Mobile App For Job Seekers

The Employment Security Division of the Nevada Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation launched the EmployNV mobile phone application, officials announced Monday.

EmployNV is the state’s online job resource where jobseekers can find local and statewide employment information, said Lynda Parven, ESD Deputy Administrator, in a news release. The site can now be downloaded at no cost on both Android and Apple phones and from Google and Apple application stores.

“DETR and JobConnect continue to look for ways to improve service to the public, and having this app will put Nevada’s employment and job search services right at our customers' fingertips, 24 hours a day, seven days a week with no waiting,” said Parven.

There are no costs or fees to use EmployNV, which provides comprehensive services in a user-friendly online experience.

To access the new EmployNV, visit www.EmployNV.gov. Users may also gain access to the site through DETR’s website and the Nevada JobConnect website at www.nevadajobconnect.com and www.nvdetr.org.

How To Find A Job In Louisiana Through The LWC

Following a recent article about Louisiana’s 4th worst state to get a job ranking by consumer site WalletHub, the Louisiana Workforce Commission (LWC) pointed out that the Pelican State has broken employment records over the last several months.

Based on the most recently released data by the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, Louisiana set an all-time seasonally adjusted employment record for the month of July, after an employment record for June. Louisiana also set an all-time seasonally adjusted employment record in April.

LWC also pointed to state resources like grants for employers, free employee training, and online and other resources for job seekers to find employment.

Its Helping Individuals Reach Employment (HiRE) online system currently has 79,193 open job listings, for which job seekers are encouraged to apply. Job seekers can look for work by industry and region of the state. There are links for recruiting events, employment services, and reemployment services for job seekers, as well as a link for employer services.

The recruiting events are held throughout the state, hosting a range of employment opportunities. Last year, the LWC helped host more than 1,100 hiring-related events for both employers and job-seekers statewide.

The LWC partners with employers by offering several programs that are federally and state-funded. They include the numerous Registered Apprenticeship programs, across industry sectors, including lineman utility training, welding, and ongoing Medical Assistant (MA) Now.

They also include the Incumbent Worker Training Program (IWTP) through which nearly 150 Louisiana employers were approved for more than $18.8 million in IWTP contracts in Fiscal Year 2017-2018. IWTP helped retain more than 24,000 employees and created more than 1,580 jobs, and contributed to an average 7.8 percent wage increase for participants, the LWC reported.

Another free program is the Small Business Employee Training (SBET) for employers with 50 or fewer employees. “Last fiscal year, the LWC approved 1,558 SBET awards, totaling more than $3.7 million in SBET contracts, allowing more than 7,300 existing employees to be trained,” the commission stated.

Similar to other states, Louisiana takes issue with the WalletHub ranking, pointing out that the top-ranked states like Washington and Colorado have high minimum wages of $11.50 and $10.20, respectively. This is hard to compare to a state like Louisiana, which does not have a minimum wage, despite several legislative attempts to establish one.

An LWC spokesperson said, “It’s clear that the rankings are focused predominantly on job quality (satisfaction, benefits, non-discrimination, disability-friendliness, commuting, etc.) and less so on labor market performance (employment growth, unemployment rate, etc.). All Louisiana employers and business organizations are responsible in helping the state move these indicators in the right direction. It’s also important to note that LWC programs are targeting some of these job quality issues that have historically received little attention, like the inclusiveness of disables persons in the workplace.”

LWC states on its website that unemployment insurance claims are less this month than they were at the same time last year. Claims ending the week of Aug 11, 2018, dropped to 2,111 from the previous week’s total of 2,204; by comparison, during the week ending Aug 12, 2017, 2,725 initial claims were filed.

The LWC website also has information for job seekers and benefits recipients on how to avoid scams, as well as free subscription to several email lists.

The Workforce Investment Board of Santa Cruz’s staff now have an even more enhanced tool at their disposal to assist them in tracking one-stop jobseeker foot traffic. The brand new Access TMC X1 client-tracking magnetic card reader was officially launched in Santa Cruz, California, and successfully linked to the Santa Cruz Virtual Career Center (www.santacruzvcc.com) on January 11, 2013. Santa Cruz County is the first one-stop to debut the new innovative X1offered to the workforce community by Geographic Solutions.

Geographic Solutions’ VOScan client-tracking module has added the new X1 technology to the already existing scan card terminal options for Santa Cruz’s Virtual Career Center. The X1’s cutting-edge functionality enables Santa Cruz to use the scan card terminals to track services provided by their career centers in real-time.X1 eliminates the need for a polling application, sending the data to a centralized database in real time.

Louisiana Modernizes the State Unemployment System to Bolster Reemployment

Geographic Solutions is helping the State of Louisiana modernize its unemployment benefits system by connecting it to the state’s Virtual OneStop system. Louisiana’s new platform – Helping Individuals Reach Employment (HIRE)– will serve as a bridge to reemployment as well as ensure accurate unemployment insurance benefits by helping to detect fraud and minimize overpayments. The bridged site is set to go live by the end of December 2012.

HIRE, powered by Geographic Solutions’ Reemployment Exchange (REX), integrates the state’s legacy UI system with the Louisiana Workforce Commission’s Virtual OneStop site and Louisiana’s labor market information. Claimants will visit one website with one log-in and have access to both UI benefits, labor exchange and labor market information. South Florida Workforce Ranks #1

- In an effort to assist in bolstering the region's economic recovery and growth, over 9,000 people were placed in jobs in the month of January through the assistance of South Florida Workforce Investment Board (SFWIB), ranking the region #1 in the state.

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity and Workforce Florida Inc. established a Monthly Job Placement Report in response to the Governor Rick Scott’s call for enhanced measurement of performance outcomes in workforce development. The report highlights job placement achievements to allow regional workforce boards and other workforce system partners to identify and replicate best practices and strategies to better assist job seekers in gaining employment.

SFWIB is ranked No. 1 for the first time since the inception of the three month-old Monthly Job Placement Report, up from its No. 2 ranking in December 2011. The regional workforce boards are assigned a ranking of 1-24 based on their job-placement performance. Some of the factors in their ranking include; the number of job seekers who gain employment after being assisted by the Career Center or through the Employ Florida Marketplace job-matching website at EmployFlorida.com; the number of available job openings in their region based on EmployFlorida.com data; and the number of people receiving unemployment compensation benefits who find employment after receiving workforce services.

SFWIB established in-house customized performance-based measuring tools to determine the overall efficiency and effectiveness of how services are delivered. Louisiana Virtual OneStop® Shows Off Their New Look!

Louisiana jobseekers and employers now have an even more enhanced tool at their disposal to assist them in finding suitable jobs, locating training opportunities and identifying skilled candidates. The Louisiana Virtual OneStop®, commonly referred to as LAVOS, upgraded to Version 11.1 of Virtual OneStop®, in December 2011, bringing numerous enhancements to individuals seeking jobs and employers seeking employees. All of the services continue to be provided at no charge to job seekers and employers. The web site for the Louisiana Virtual OneStop is www.laworks.net.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission is proud to report that so far this year, the LAVOS portal has had 286,830 registered individual users and nearly 10,000 employer users. Yearly, the LWC helps more than 170,000 people get jobs or transition to better jobs.

Users will notice a different look and feel when they visit the site. Louisiana Workforce Commission Executive Director Curt Eysink notes, “The upgrades focused on greater access to workforce information, coupled with cleaner and more streamlined experience to assist job seekers and employers in finding what they need quickly.” The site will feature a new layout structure, highlighted by a revolving image carousel along with a prominent navigation bar, a collapsible menu in the side navigation and easy-to-understand content. Additional navigation tabs include, special services and resources. The resource center is equipped with a help desk, an online learning center that houses video tutorials, and ALISON, a leading free online learning site.

Version 11.1 of Geographic Solutions’ Virtual OneStop® will provide users with a wide array of employment-related services. Job seekers search for available jobs using a search engine that aggregates jobs from company and government websites, newspaper postings and corporate job boards. Job searches can be conducted for a radius of a zip code, by city or county, by metropolitan or workforce area, or on a statewide basis. Job seekers will be able to search for training opportunities within the system.

Employers can have access to recent training graduates and can search for talent and rank the candidates using the automated system. The site was actually designed around valuable feedback from area employers. The site will also offer employer account management, which will give employers the ability to create multiple subaccounts. Job vacancies will be posted through a step-by-step process. This will allow employers to complete job postings at their convenience and not at one session, because inputs can now be saved periodically throughout the process.

Job seekers can conduct tailored job searches for Green Jobs, Veteran-preferred jobs, etc. Occupations that are identified as O*NET Green Occupations, are indicated with an icon in Virtual OneStop and Virtual LMI, similarly how high-demand and Bright Outlook occupations are. The templates available for resumes have also been enhanced to include a Federal format option, which can be used when applying for government jobs.
