For the more than 200,000 service members that return from active duty, transitioning to civilian life is often challenging and can present unforeseen barriers. This can be especially true when it comes to finding suitable employment.
The NC Division of Workforce Solutions (DWS) provides experienced help to veterans, transitioning service members, and eligible spouses seeking a job. North Carolina is home to nearly 800,000 veterans and several of the nation's most important defense installations.
Recently, the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) recognized three NC DWS team members for their innovative work with the NCWorks Veterans Portal. DWS Regional Analysts Chris Silvers, Amy Pritchett, and Teresa Boone developed a way to identify employers that have received HIRE Vets Medallion Awards. The DOL uses these medallions to acknowledge employers committed to hiring, retaining, and training veterans.
Because of their work, job seekers surfing the www.ncworks.gov website will now see medallion icons next to each job posting if the hiring business has won the award. Not only is this contribution important to veterans — the results of this collaboration are shared with all clients that use our software.
Since the HIRE Vets Medallion program's inception in 2018, 1,341 employers have received the award. November's employer honorees collectively hired more than 37,000 veterans.

As a core part of our product line, we help veterans find jobs. In North Carolina and Florida, our partners have worked with veterans to launch these custom workforce system entrances. In 2020, the NCWorks Veterans Portal welcomed 8,000 visitors, and the Employ Florida Vets Portal saw 16,000 visitors (source: Google Analytics).
