In the wake of COVID-19, more than 3 million Americans filed for unemployment the week of March 14th, according to U.S. Department of Labor data. That includes close to 40,000 people in Tennessee.  
“The numbers from last week were unprecedented for Tennessee and for the nation,” Chris Cannon, assistant administrator of communications for the state Department of Labor, said.
The department reported unemployment filings for the week of March 14thincreased by thousands. In the week prior, only 2,700 hundred people made unemployment claims.
As COVID-19 impacts the economy, the state is making unemployment benefits easier to access.
