PALM HARBOR, FL – (July 21, 2009) – Geographic Solutions’ Employ Florida Marketplace (EFM) has officially launched their Silver Edition to State Chambers of Commerce in late June 2009, to address the mutual needs of Florida businesses, organizations and Florida job seekers over the age of 50. Sponsored by Workforce Florida, Inc., the Agency for Workforce Innovation, the Florida Department of Elder Affairs, the Florida Chamber of Commerce, the Governor’s Commission on Volunteerism and Community Service and other members of the Silver Edition Task Force, the website was created to provide useful information to older, retirement-age job seekers who wish to remain in -- or return to -- the workforce.
In recent years, economic statistics have shown a surge in the amount of retirees and potential retirees wanting to continue employment or return to the workforce. Americans are living longer so many need to supplement their retirement income, while some feel they would like to give back to or stay involved in their communities and there is a percentage that are simply not ready to enter into full retirement, but would rather scale back to a more flexible work schedule. Currently on EFM, 21% of the job seekers fall into the 50+ age bracket.
In Florida, the age demographic is shifting heavily to an older population and forward-thinking employers are seeking ways to attract older adults. These employers are what we call “older worker friendly”, and there are currently 1,484 of them listed on EFM’s Silver Edition site. Older worker friendly employers have posted 1,538 job postings to the system since its “soft launch” in Jacksonville, FL in February 2009. Those 1,538 job postings represent 5,929 job positions. EFM has reported 2,500 visits to the Silver Edition site since the launch.
Silver Edition provides job seekers with a simple default job search by entering a zip code and by identifying whether they want jobs with Older Worker Friendly Businesses, Volunteer jobs or paid jobs. Those who register in the EFM site can then create a resume, cover letter and even complete various skills and interest assessments. They can also change their job search criteria, using EFM’s full search capability. All of the job search services and tools provided by EFM and Silver Edition are available at no charge to job seekers and employers. Due to the success of Silver Edition, Geographic Solutions is working to develop other “micro portals” that target Veterans and Green Jobs.
